This alluring little town in North
Maine is the gateway to Baxter
State Park and one of Penobscot County's most popular destinations. Watched
over by Mount
Katahdinthe province's highest peakand surrounded by the Maine
North Woods, Millinocket offers a naturally beautiful setting and myriad recreational
opportunities for outdoor lovers. Summer inspires kayaking, boating, rafting,
fishing, hiking, climbing and camping, while winter welcomes eager snowshoers,
cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. In fact, snowmobiling has long been popular
in the Millinocket area and this is evident at the Northern
Timber Cruisers Antique Snowmobile Museum. The town's history goes beyond
snowmobiling, however, and visitors can discover the depth of its past at the
Millinocket
Historical Society and Museum. Incorporated in 1901, the town of Millinocket
was created to service the pulp
and paper mill, which was built on the Penobscot
River at Millinocket
Stream in 1899 and still stands there today. A stroll along historic Penobscot
and Katahdin avenues reveals numerous 20th-century buildings housing various businesses
and visitors will find plenty of modern shops and services along bustling Central
Street.
