This vast commercial forest stretches across more than 3.5 million acres of northwestern Maine, adorning the counties of Aroostook, northern Somerset, Penobscot and Piscataquis. In addition to providing timber for paper and construction, the Maine North Woods provide a rich environment for recreation and hunting. From sugar maple to yellow birch, black bears to bald eagles, numerous tree species and varied wildlife can be found in this valuable forest.
Baxter State Park was dedicated to the people of Maine by Percival P. Baxter in 1939. Two mountain ranges exist in the park including the mountains that surround Katahdin and the Traveler Range. Camping, hiking and other opportunities can be found within the park. A limited number of visitprs are admitted to the park each day, so to avoid disappoinment, arrive early.
